Polite Society believed in God so that it need not talk of Him. How tolerant religion seemed! How convenient it was: the Christian could abandon Mass and yet marry his children in church, smile at the religious 'art' of the place Saint-Sulpice and shed tears as he listened to the Wedding March from Lohengrin; he was not obliged to lead an exemplary life or to die in despair, or even to have himself cremated.
